When someone mentions Croatia it’s hard not to think about its wonderful coast. Sea, sun, and fun have become synonyms for the Adriatic for people all over the world. It’s not rare that our guests tell us that they fell in love with Korčula from the first moment they set eyes on the natural beauty of the island and took their first swim in the clear blue sea. Among the locals, summer is when life gets dynamic. A bunch of families love spending their whole days at the beach having fun, teaching their children to swim, snorkeling, finding shells on the beach, and eating lots of ice cream. For those working, taking a relaxing swim after work, and soaking up the last rays of sun charges their batteries in no time.
In the hope that you will also get to experience the beauties of Korčula’s beaches we wrote this blogpost containing some of our favorite coves and beaches in Korčula, so let us begin!
Rasohatica is one of the coves that are part of Defora. Defora is the name given to the south side of the island close to Žrnovo Village. Defora contains many beautiful beaches which could make a list of their own and many of them are actually included in this list. One thing to keep in mind is that Defora beaches are quite secluded and most of them have only a few people staying there, no shops or restaurants, but usually have daily visits from both tourists and locals looking to spend a beautiful day on the beach far away from overcrowded swimming spots. Also, the roads that lead to Defora beaches are mostly dirt roads that don’t lead all the way to the beach. There are no real parking spots, but people park their cars on the side of the road. If you feel up to the task, you can take a walk from Postrana to one of the beaches, which should take you an hour or two depending on the beach you choose. A great way to explore Defora is by boat, which would allow you to experience the beauty of the south side of the island from both the seaside and the coast. Like most of the beaches in Korčula, these are also pebble beaches.
Even though it’s still quite secluded, Rasohatica is a bit different from other beaches in Defora since it has more houses. The beaches in Rasohatica offer a splendid view over the cove and a seemingly unending view of the sea. The water is very clear, and since it is a cove it is quite protected from very strong wind. Bring some snacks with you and enjoy a full day of swimming in this beautiful cove.
Another Defora gem, Pavja Luka is a gorgeous cove with extremely clear water and lots of sun. If you are lucky enough, there might be a small restaurant Konoba Pavja Luka working in this mostly uninhabited place. The restaurant offers local food and wine, and we recommend trying a traditional Korčula dish Žrnovski makaruni. While taking a swim in this cove make sure to see the Granja Spila cave but be mindful of falling rocks in the close proximity of the cave. The water near the cave gets super cold and it makes for a really refreshing swim. A Korčula must-swim spot if you ask us!
The last of our Defora picks, these two neighboring beaches separated by gorgeous tall evergreen trees offer a real treat for a day trip to the beach. Grab a portable fridge filled with your favorite foods and refreshing drinks, a sun umbrella and snorkeling gear, and you are good to go.
Vela Pržina got its name from the regional word for sand which doesn’t come as a surprise considering this is one of the only few sand beaches in Korčula. Since walking on pebbles might be a new experience for a lot of people visiting Korčula, Pržina offers a softer alternative. Pržina is located in Lumbarda, and while this nice sand beach might not provide you with the privacy like some other beaches from this list, it is guaranteed that you will have fun. At Pržina beach you can have a volleyball game with your friends and family, have some drinks or a lunch at the beach restaurant, all coupled with swimming and sunbathing. The beach also has parking spots available, which may come in handy.
Perhaps the most famous beach on Korčula, this pebble beach offers a real energy reset. If you don’t have your own car, you can order a taxi ride to this beautiful beach. Named after the village of Pupnat, which is located in the interior of the island, this cove serves as a quick sea getaway for the residents of Pupnat as well as tourists wishing to explore this part of the island. This beach also has a bar which offers refreshments for hot summer days, but make sure to check their working hours.
For people seeking a more dynamic day at the beach, Prižba is the perfect place to go. This fun place close to Blato, offers jet skis, kayaks and paddle boards to rent. If that is not enough adrenaline for you, take a walk around and discover amazing cliff jumping spots. After you got the adrenaline boost, get a cocktail at Beach Bar Ratak and spend the rest of your day relaxing.
Moving on to the north side of the island, in Račišće, beaches Vaja and Samograd offer stunning views of Pelješac peninsula. One of the favorite places among locals, Vaja or Samograd is the place to go if you want to enjoy the north part of the island. If you stay here until evening you might get some wonderful views of the sunset. On your way to these beaches, you can stop in the small village of Račišće and take a quick stroll through the place, grab an ice cream and head to the beach.
