Korčula Go

Located just a few kilometers from the bustling town of Korčula, Žrnovo is a quaint little village that provides a serene escape from the crowds, where narrow stone streets wind through clusters of traditional stone houses and lush Mediterranean gardens.

Žrnovo is not only significant for its historical and architectural charm but also for its proximity to one of the island’s natural treasures: the Special Forest Vegetation Reserve – Kočje. This reserve is a haven for biodiversity, boasting a rich array of flora and fauna unique to the region. It plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, protecting the island’s unique ecosystems and offering a pristine environment for nature enthusiasts and hikers. Exploring Žrnovo and its surrounding landscapes provides visitors with a profound appreciation for the harmonious blend of human heritage and natural splendor that defines Korčula.

Kočje covers 4.62 hectares and within it you’ll encounter intriguing formations, vaulted passages, and pathways created by dolomite rocks, all surrounded by lush vegetation. It got its special reserve status in 1962.

This unique area is home to the majestic holm oak, whose grand canopies help retain moisture in the environment, along with a diverse array of lichens and mosses. The reserve also boasts a rich variety of flora, including laurel bushes, turpentine trees, mock privet shrubs, myrtles, and arbutus trees, sometimes called strawberry trees because of their fruit that resembles strawberries.

The Legend of the Kočje Forest Fairies

Adding to the enchantment of Kočje is the famous legend of the Kočje forest fairies. According to local folklore, there was a villager, called Mikuleto, who spent most of his time in Kočje instead of working. Unknown to the rest of the villagers, the forest fairies would appear to him and dance while he played the flute for them. Enchanted by their company, Mikuleto would return home with his work unfinished, which soon led to questions and complaints from his wife, who wondered what he was doing all day.

The next day, Mikuleto complained to the fairies that his wife no longer allowed him to come to Kočje. To reward him, the fairies gave him a full and heavy sack, warning him not to open it before he crossed his home threshold. However, Mikuleto’s curiosity got the better of him, and halfway home, he emptied the sack, finding only coal. When he confessed the whole story to his wife at home, she discovered a few gold coins at the bottom of the sack. She sent him back to pick up the coal, but there was nothing left on the path.

For many years after, Mikuleto would visit Kočje and call out to his forest fairies, but they never appeared to him again. Mikuleto never got a second chance.

The Fairy Spring

At the entrance to Kočje, a freshwater spring emerges from the dolomite rocks, its crystal-clear waters flowing gracefully. This spring, aptly named the Fairy Spring, pays homage to the mystical fairies from the legend. Its pristine waters, untouched by time, symbolize the enduring magic and enchantment of Kočje. Visitors are drawn to this natural wonder, captivated by its beauty and the romantic allure of the fairy tale it evokes.

How to Reach Kočje

To reach Kočje, the first step is to take a taxi to Žrnovo. From there, due to the narrow macadam road leading to Kočje, visitors should continue on foot. The walk takes approximately 25 minutes along a scenic route, providing breathtaking views of the sea and the Pelješac Peninsula. This leisurely stroll immerses travelers in the natural beauty of Korčula, setting the stage for an enchanting experience in the heart of the forest reserve.

Remember to leave no trace and respect the environment by refraining from leaving any trash behind in the reserve. This ensures the preservation of Kočje for future generations to enjoy.
