SUMMARY:Marco Polo [Opera Week]
DESCRIPTION:This opera is one of many partially forgotten or lost Croatian operas\, or in this case\, destroyed. The score and nearly all orchestral parts were lost in the devastating fire that consumed the Croatian National Theatre in Split in 1970\, with the building’s reconstruction taking until 1979. \nThankfully\, the Yugoslav Composers’ Society had printed a piano reduction of the opera\, although without any notes specifying the instruments for each section. Despite this\, the piano extract played a crucial role in preserving the work. Originally composed in 1954 to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s birth (1254-1954) and completed in 1955\, the opera was performed only three times in 1960 and twice in 1962. \nNow\, as we approach the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death\, the time is ripe to revive this forgotten masterpiece. The revival involves an extensive orchestration project based on the existing piano reduction\, overseen by maestro Josip degl’ Ivellio\, who previously worked on the Baroque opera The Siege of Korčula. The work also includes costume design\, set design\, and direction\, all aimed at bringing this lost piece of Croatian cultural heritage back to life. \n\nTickets available for purchase at Kaleta Travel Agency and Korkyra Info. \n\nWhen buying two or more tickets\, you get 20% discount. \nIn the event of rain\, the performance will be held at the Culture Centre.

SUMMARY:Nikola Šubić Zrinski [Opera Week]
DESCRIPTION:Ivan pl. Zajc’s opera Nikola Šubić Zrinjski stands as the most celebrated and iconic piece of Croatian musical theatre. With its deep historical connotations\, the work has earned the status of a national treasure and continues to hold an enduring place in the country’s cultural heritage. \nThough musicologists and critics have discussed certain flaws in the libretto\, the opera has withstood the test of time\, transcending aesthetic judgments and emerging victorious over initial critiques. Today\, it needs no defense—Zrinjski speaks for itself as a work of timeless artistry. \nThe opera premiered on November 4\, 1876\, at the National Theatre in Zagreb\, with Zajc himself conducting. Based on Körner’s drama Zriny\, the libretto was crafted by Hugo Badalić. \nDon’t miss the chance to experience this landmark piece of Croatian operatic history! \n\nTickets available for purchase at Kaleta Travel Agency and Korkyra Info. \n\nWhen buying two or more tickets\, you get 20% discount. \nIn the event of rain\, the performance will be held at the Culture Centre.

SUMMARY:The Siege of Korčula [Opera Week]
DESCRIPTION:Korčula\, with its romantic streets and squares\, is the perfect setting for intimate classical music concerts\, a tradition that has continued for years every July and August. This August\, the spotlight is on Opera Week\, featuring a stunning musical performance that began two years ago with the premiere of the comic opera “The Siege of Korčula.” \nOriginally performed in London on August 12\, 1876\, at the Royal Theatre on Haymarket\, this opera was composed by Samuel Arnold\, a prominent figure in late Baroque English music and a disciple of Handel. The libretto was penned by John O’Keefe\, a celebrated playwright of his time\, often called the “London Molière.” \nThough the original score was lost\, a simple harpsichord arrangement of the sung parts survived. Today\, thanks to the dedication of Dora Maček (translation)\, Silvio Foretić (adaptation of the first and second acts)\, and Josip degl’ Ivellio (musicological research\, orchestration\, and adaptation of the third act)\, this opera has been meticulously reconstructed and brought back to life. \nJoin us for this unique operatic experience and dive into the rich cultural heritage of Korčula! \n\nTickets available for purchase at Kaleta Travel Agency and Korkyra Info. \n\nWhen buying two or more tickets\, you get 20% discount. \nIn the event of rain\, the performance will be held at the Culture Centre.
