Korčula Go

Nestled in the quiet village of Pupnat, Konoba Mate is the epitome of a hidden gem on Korčula Island. The three of us, eager to experience authentic local flavors, found ourselves at this charming family-run konoba, where tradition, creativity, and local ingredients blend seamlessly. From the warm, rustic ambiance to the thoughtfully prepared dishes, our evening at Konoba Mate was one to remember.

Starters: A Flavorful Beginning

We began our meal with two beautifully presented starters that showcased the island’s rich bounty. The Farmer’s Plate was a stunning array of local delights: slices of thin, salty prosciutto, creamy goat cheese, marinated eggplant with just the right amount of bite, plump olives, tangy capers, sweet dried tomatoes, and two unique spreads—an indulgent eggplant pâté and a smooth prosciutto pâté. Each bite transported us to the island’s countryside, with flavors that felt rustic yet refined.

Alongside the Farmer’s Plate, we also tried the shrimp tartare. Fresh, delicate, and balanced with subtle seasonings, it was a refreshing contrast to the heartier flavors on the plate, and a perfect preview of the seafood so abundant in this part of the Adriatic.

Main Dishes: The Pasta Experience

For our mains, we decided to dive into the house-made pasta dishes, each offering something distinct and delicious.

First, there was the goat cheese ravioli in sage sauce. The ravioli itself was perfectly tender, filled with a creamy goat cheese that had a delicate nuttiness, and the sage butter sauce was aromatic and rich, adding a comforting earthiness to the dish. It was simple yet elegant, the kind of dish that lets its ingredients shine.

Next, we tried the homemade pasta with wild fennel. This was a truly unique experience—wild fennel brought a fresh, almost anise-like flavor, which paired beautifully with the chewy pasta. The dish felt like a tribute to the wild herbs that grow on Korčula, bringing a real sense of place to the plate.

The third dish, homemade pasta with almond pesto and cherry tomatoes, was a vibrant burst of flavors. The almond pesto was creamy and rich but had a subtlety to it that complemented the sweetness of the homegrown cherry tomatoes. This dish was a perfect marriage of textures and flavors, with every bite balancing freshness and indulgence.

Dessert: A Sweet Finale

Though we were more than satisfied, we couldn’t resist sampling a few of Konoba Mate’s desserts. We shared a flan, a chocolate cake, and a cheesecake, each offering something delightful. The flan was light, smooth, and perfectly caramelized, while the chocolate cake was rich and fudgy, satisfying every chocolate lover’s dream. The cheesecake, creamy and slightly tangy, felt like a lovely middle ground between the two.

But the true surprise of the evening came with the herb sorbetto. Wanting to try something unique, we each ordered one, and it exceeded our expectations. The combination of herbs was refreshing and palate-cleansing, with a cooling effect that lingered—an unexpected yet perfect way to end the meal.

Drinks: A Sip of Nature

To accompany our meal, we enjoyed homemade herbal syrups—each a fragrant, flavorful nod to the island’s natural offerings. We tried sage, mint, and elderflower syrups, all of which were delicately sweet and refreshing. These drinks added a light, refreshing touch to our evening, especially when paired with the herb sorbetto.

Final Thoughts

Konoba Mate is more than just a restaurant—it’s an experience that immerses you in the tastes and traditions of Korčula. Each dish is crafted with care, using local, homegrown ingredients that tell the story of the island’s land and sea. While the entire meal was a delightful journey, our favorites stood out: the homemade pasta with almond pesto and cherry tomatoes was a perfect harmony of flavors, and the herb sorbetto offered a refreshing, surprising end to the evening.

It’s no surprise that Konoba Mate has earned a Michelin recommendation, a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to quality and authentic local cuisine. From the first bite of our Farmer’s Plate to the last spoonful of sorbetto, every moment at Konoba Mate was unforgettable. If you’re looking for a true taste of Korčula, with authentic flavors and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, this is a place not to be missed.
